Buy a cheap truck asap (don't forget to save a little bit extra for gas on your first haul). I won't upgrade that truck; just make runs until I can upgrade to something with a bit more power (in previous games, this mean going from a Class C to a Class B truck), as the engine in that first truck is going to struggle on grades and that costs time.

If you have hired drivers, check their income. That might be where your money went. To get out of debt, could just take a couple loans to get it down, then take 2 big jobs and you'll be set.
